Vermont Health Connect deadline is Monday

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. -

The deadline to sign up for Vermont Health Connect is Monday, but some Vermonters are still running into problems with the system.  Now the state is providing special enrollment for anyone who hasn't completed process.

"We've gotten an exclusion from the feds to give us the time so that anyone who signed up but is having technical problems, we're gonna make sure that they don't lose coverage,"  said Gov. Peter Shumlin.

For Vermonters who began signing up, the state says they will receive coverage regardless of whether their application is complete by the deadline.
More than 55,000 Vermonters have picked a health plan through Vermont Health Connect and more than 43,000 are fully enrolled in new coverage. That means there are still 12,000 incomplete applications.

"Our job is to not only celebrate the folks who have successfully navigated the web site or have signed up and have health insurance, but to get the smaller group of folks who still haven't signed up and get them through the puzzle," Shumlin said.

"We would encourage anybody if they are concerned about their coverage, now is the time to sort it out," said Vt. Health Access Commissioner Mark Larson.

Call centers stayed open throughout the weekend to provide assistance, but there are still concerns over whether there will be enough assistance for the thousands who have not completed their application. "We expect there will be a lot of people who still have questions in April about the plans that they've signed up for, so we don't expect to be making any changes in the near future," Larson said.

Vermonters who do not begin the application process by March 31st will have to wait for 2015 open enrollment and may also face a fine. Individuals faced with a qualifying event and those who are eligible for Medicaid can enroll at any time.

Vermonters with questions or issues can call Vermont Health Connect toll-free at 855-899-9600. Vermont Health Connect also accepts questions and comments by email: vthealthconnect@state.vt.us
