Patriots' mascot surprises Vt. school children

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

He's a big guy with a big job. And Tuesday, it was his mission to spread the word about breakfast. Pat Patriot made a visit to C.P. Smith Elementary School to bring the class a snack and stress the importance of fueling up.

"I think he's really cool. I like the Patriots," said Macey Allard, a fourth-grader.

And his message wasn't a tough pill to swallow in this group. The snack of choice was fruit and milk. The free meal is offered every day to every student and it's paid for by a federal grant.

"Our goal is that every child goes home to a family that can sit down and have a meal and enough food to do that. Unfortunately, in Burlington, three out of five kids do not go back to that kind of home," said Doug Davis of the Burlington Food District food systems.

In order to take the stigma away from the low-income students, the school opens up the free food line to everyone.

"We never want students to feel as though they're being identified within our line we want to make sure everything feels they can come in regardless of their income," Davis said.

Whether or not these kids root for the boys in blue in the fall, they know they'll need all the fuel they can get to be as big as a Patriot one day.
