Sexual abuse prevention task force presents final report

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

A task force formed in the wake of a tragedy eight years ago presented its final report to the Legislature Tuesday.

Lawmakers created the sexual abuse prevention task force in 2006 in response to the rape and murder of 12-year-old Brooke Bennett.

The group has returned to the Legislature each year with suggestions to better protect children. This year, members are calling for annual training for mandatory reporters, a bill addressing teen dating violence, and more money for unfunded mandates.

"We tried to pull some recommendations that we thought were really doable and that would make a huge impact, and that address the comprehensive prevention, so I am optimistic," said Bethany Pombar from the Vermont Network Against Domestic & Sexual Violence.

The task force's legislative mandate expires this year, but group members say they'll continue to meet. They say their work is not done even if they won't be presenting findings to the Legislature in the future.
