Pinwheels highlight child abuse prevention efforts

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds of pinwheels dot the Statehouse lawn in Montpelier.

The annual display is meant to raise awareness of child abuse prevention efforts.

The subject has been in the spotlight following the recent death of a Poultney 2-year-old.

Dave Yacovone, the commissioner of the Vermont Department for Children and Families says they've received more reports this year than ever before, but that's actually a good sign.

"We need to create a climate where everybody is looking out for kids. So what can help most is for people to look out for children and when they're worried, to report to us," Yacovone said.

Yacovone says despite the high number of reports, fewer children than ever before need to be permanently pulled from homes. He attributes that to a greater willingness to report and the success of intervention programs.
