Plattsburgh mayor hopes TV show can help remodel City Hall

Posted: Updated:

City Hall in Plattsburgh is nearly 100 years old. The building may look pristine on the outside, but Mayor James Calnon, R-Plattsburgh, says the inside needs work.

"It's like buying a lottery ticket. If you win, what a great idea. If you don't, you haven't really wasted that much time and effort, or much money," said Calnon.

Calnon says a remodeling TV show would be a big money saver. City Hall's roof needs fixing and one of the biggest issues is the windows, which Calnon says are in rough shape.

"We have 56 windows, so we're in the range of $250,000 to $300,000 just in windows," said Calnon.

No TV show has been selected yet to do the renovations. Calnon will be sending applications to every home makeover show there is, to see if any are interested in doing the job.

"'This Old House,' just by virtue of its stature, and the fact they are very committed to historic preservation, would be a real big win, but we also looked at the Home and Garden TV, seen dozens of shows that are related to home makeovers," said Calnon.

Catherine Crowningshield works at the home improvement store Curtis Lumber. She shares what changes she'd make to City Hall, if she had the choice.

"Pretty characteristics, it's nice you walk in, there's a big anchor, there's some Plattsburgh history as soon as you walk up those steps. So really just a paint job just to freshen things up would be nice," said Crowningshield.

Calnon says City Hall is the people's office and improvements will be made, whether they will be televised or not. Calnon and his team are currently putting together an audition tape to send out to the remodeling shows.
