New campaign raises awareness about texting and driving

Posted: Updated:

You drive - you text - you pay. It's a new campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of texting and driving.

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Law enforcement agencies will be cracking down on drivers who text behind the wheel.

The U.S. Department of Transportation is giving $8 million to each state participating in this program and others like it. The Clinton County Sheriff's Department in New York is one of the many agencies involved in fighting distracted driving.

"Takes over 3,000 lives a year and over 400,000 injuries a year. So it's a necessary crackdown. People need to learn that when you're driving you need to concentrate on your driving. Any mobile device or anything like that, it can wait," said Sgt. Frank Mercier from Clinton County Sheriff's Dept.

Texting while driving is banned in Vermont, New York and New Hampshire.
