Scheuermann repeats call to scrap Vt. ed funding system

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

A possible challenger to the governor is repeating her call to scrap Vermont's education funding system.

Thursday, the House of Representatives will vote on a hike to the state's property tax. Rep. Heidi Scheuermann, who is considering running against Gov. Peter Shumlin in this year's election, and Rep. Patti Komline plan on introducing an amendment. It would require lawmakers to craft a new system in time for the 2017-2018 school year.

Scheuermann says Vermont can't afford property tax hikes every year.

"Vermonters have waited long enough and by having it open so that the Legislature can consider a number of different proposals that are already out there and even others that may not be out there yet, is a responsible way to do it within two years," said Scheuermann, R-Stowe.

Proponents of the current say system ballooning special ed costs, personnel and health costs are the problem, not the funding mechanism.

The governor has also laid blame on the over-willingness of school boards to spend.
