Report: GlobalFoundries in lead to buy IBM chip plants

ESSEX JUNCTION, Vt. -

IBM may be getting closer to selling itssemiconductor division, which would include the chipmaking plant in EssexJunction. That's according to a report from the Wall Street Journal, which saysGlobalFoundries has emerged as the leading contender.

The deal is believed to include IBMfacilities in Essex, Fishkill, N.Y., and Montreal.

GlobalFoundries is a growing player inthe semiconductor industry with a chip plant outside Albany, N.Y.

Intel and Taiwan SemiconductorManufacturing were also in the running. TSMC reportedly dropped out. Intel isstill interested, but GlobalFoundries reportedly has a stronger interest.

Word that IBM was looking to unloadits fabrication plants emerged back in February as part of Big Blue's effortsto boost profitability following a poor fourth quarter in 2013. IBM also saidit would be cutting jobs and did lay off about 140 Vermont workers last month.
