Celebrating volunteerism in the North Country

Posted: Updated:
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -

Mark Szczerbak and his son are outside shoveling ice and snow, but not in their own driveway.

"A number of us are out helping in the community with the United Way Day of Caring," says Szczerbak.

The Day of Caring is a day to celebrate volunteerism in the Adirondack region. Community members gather to help each other. Szczerback's mission is to clean up the Battle of Plattsburgh Museum.

"We did some raking, we're clearing some ice so they can put some displays into a new location here. We dusted, did a lot of cleaning, and really whatever they needed we were here to support," he says.

All day long volunteers across Clinton, Essex, and Franklin counties are participating in the annual Day of Caring. More than 500 volunteers are painting, cleaning, and feeding the community with the hopes that this caring lasts throughout the year.

"There are events every weekend, and during the week. We're out every month of the year volunteering and it's nice to bring it all into one day of caring. We can all be out at the same time and really make a big change all in one day," says Hannah Provost, of Glens Falls National Bank.

Employees from North Country businesses spread out to work on 43 different projects. The Day of Caring is hosted by United Way of the Adirondack Region - a nonprofit volunteer organization. Getting a fresh paint job in their main building is the community's way of saying "thanks" for all they do.

And a food drive outside Sam's Club in Plattsburgh is just one of several. The collected food will be donated to food shelves in the North Country.

"We're hoping to collect 1,200 to 2,000 items," says Kimberly Davis, of the Plattsburgh Noon Kiwanis Club.

A day for people in the North Country to get together and show they care.
