ST. ALBANS, Vt. -

A street in St. Albans was evacuated Saturday evening after police say they discovered an active lab for making methamphetamine.

Police shut down Lake Street, between Catherine and Market, after a resident in an apartment complex found discarded materials to make meth and called police. The apartment complex was evacuated and a Vermont State Police clandestine lab team was called in. Police say they were already investigating a suspicious purchase from earlier in the day.

"We were alerted earlier about some individuals who had purchased some precursor items but in and of itself, we didn't really have enough to take action. We were uncertain as to where those precursor materials were going, or went to. However, we were monitoring this situation closely when this call came in," said St. Albans Police Chief Gary Taylor.

Police have identified the suspects but no arrests have been made. The Red Cross assisted residents who were displaced during the evacuation, but all tenants are back in the building.
