Vermont school changes may not get done this year

Posted: Updated:

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The chairman of the Vermont Senate Education Committee says it may be too late this year to pass a school district consolidation plan being pushed by the parallel committee in the House.

Sen. Dick McCormack, a Windsor County Democrat, says there likely won't be time enough from when the House gets the bill to the Senate and the expected early-May adjournment of the Legislature to give the measure a thorough review.

The bill passed out of the House Education Committee and is currently being reviewed by the House Ways and Means Committee. It isn't expected to be voted on by the full House before the week of April 13.

As drafted by the House Education Committee, the bill calls for bigger school districts and fewer boards.
