2 rescued from Winooski River

WINOOSKI, Vt. -

A water rescue on the Winooski River Sunday evening.

According to fire fighters, two men walked out on the ice from the downtown Winooski side -- trying to get to an island on the river.  But police say the ice gave way and the men ended up in the water.  They were able to make it to the island, which is located between Winooski and Burlington.  Multiple  agencies responded, including Colchester Technical rescue.  Crews used boats to reach the men and bring them to shore safely.

Police say the ice is not safe this time of year and no one should venture out onto it.  "'There is no safe ice this time of year.  Please stay off of it.  It may look like it is thick in certain areas but you can find pockets that are still quite thin -- especially on moving water.  You never want to get on ice on moving water," said Burlington Fire Deputy Chief David Roberts.

The two men were evaluated by medical personnel once they made it to shore.  Rescuers say they were cold but otherwise doing ok.  Their names were not released.
