Candlelight vigil for missing Plattsburgh student

Posted: Updated:

As candles burned, prayers were said for 20-year-old SUNY Plattsburgh student Kodi Beckles. Friends gathered outside his residence hall Monday night.

"Kodi was definitely an amazing individual. Someone that left an imprint in your heart. He was someone that once you met him he was unforgettable," said Karen Jimenez, a friend of Beckles.

Beckles' friends reported him missing Saturday afternoon after he did not show up to a campus event they say he normally would have attended.

Plattsburgh city police, New York state police and University police then began investigating. They say Beckles was last seen around 1 a.m. Saturday, leaving an off-campus party alone.

Chief Arlene Sabo of SUNY Plattsburgh Police said, "It's been a heartfelt investigation. People have gone way above and beyond and has done a nice job with the family who are totally devastated by the loss of their son."

Megan McGlynn was with Beckles the night he went missing. She said, "There are a lot of bits and pieces of the story that don't make sense. A lot is unknown at this point still."

Police found a body matching Beckles' description shortly before 11 a.m. Monday in a wooded area behind Knight Automotive on Route 3 in Plattsburgh. Investigators then made a tentative identification.

The details of his death are still under investigation. Police say at this point there is no evidence of foul play, but they're looking into a medical condition that may have required urgent care.

Those who knew Beckles say this is a devastating loss.

"It's still unreal to us. Like it really is. It still feels like he's just gonna pop up and everything is just going to be OK and it's not and it just hurts so bad," said Naomi Thurst, one of Kodi's closest friends.

Beckles' body was transported to the medical examiner in Albany. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday. Loved ones hope it will provide some answers.
