Leahy: Cuban Twitter idea 'cockamamie'

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy says the U.S. government's creation of a Twitter-like network in Cuba was "cockamamie."

The comment came at a hearing Tuesday in which Leahy also criticized the Obama administration for failing to secure the release of American contractor Alan Gross who was working on another secret program to expand internet access in Cuba.

"We should remember while we debate what USAID is doing in Cuba, U.S. citizen Alan Gross remains in solitary confinement in his fifth year in captivity, solely because he was carrying out a USAID program which was dumb in its conception!" said Leahy, D-Vermont.

The Obama administration says it has been working to release Gross and defended both the internet and social media programs as efforts to expand democracy in Cuba.
