Leahy: How will Comcast-Time Warner deal impact consumers?

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

Comcast is presenting its case for its $45-billion takeover of Time Warner Cable, saying the deal benefits consumers and doesn't limit competition. Executives from both companies testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee Wednesday.

Comcast says the takeover will allow it to boost internet speeds for Time Warner Cable customers and provide better video on demand service.

Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy says he wants to make sure the deal will truly benefit consumers.

"Consumers don't want to hear complex legal jargon or obscure regulatory terms," said Leahy, D-Vermont. "They just want to know why their cable bills keep going up. They want to know why they do not have more choice of providers. And consumers want to know is this merger good for them or not?"

Comcast says online alternatives have created competition in video and there is at least one broadband competitor in almost all of its markets.
