Vt. man sentenced for child molestation, porn

ST. ALBANS, Vt. -

Mechenna Ford, 36, of Milton, entered the courtroom Wednesday morning prepared to go to prison. Ford arrested in March 2013 for sexually exploiting an 8-year-old girl. He was charged with sexually assaulting the girl, six counts of child pornography and assaulting an officer. Videos of the acts were found at his home after police received a tip from an online image hosting site.

"We knew that the video had been taken with a cellphone and based on interviews at the scene we were able to determine that Mechenna Ford was likely in possession of the phone," said Matthew Raymond, an investigator for the attorney general's office.

Police say the files were stored in an online peer-to-peer program used to share files.

"There were over 9,000 images of child pornography and over 200 videos," Vt. State Police Lt. Brian Penders said.

Ford was facing 20 years to life; after reaching a plea agreement, he will be behind bars for at least 15 years.

"This is disgusting and I need treatment," Ford said. "I want to be a better person."

"His approach has always been I want the maximum sentence. I want these things to stop and maybe if they make an example of me, maybe it will help some other person," said Mark Keller, Ford's lawyer.

Relatives of the victim say the jail time Ford does cannot restore the innocence of the young girl.

"There is nothing that can fix the harm that Mr. Ford has caused, but they understand that this is the process and this is a reasonable outcome," said John Treadwell, the Vt. assistant attorney general.

A report by the Vermont Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force reveals that Vermont children are being sexually exploited at an alarming rate. Since 2010, the attorney general's office has criminally charged 22 offenders and seized tens of thousands of videos and images.

"We're not going to be able to get a handle on these types of crimes until we can stop the abuse of children. And it's not just sexual assault, it's also child pornography," Vt. Superior Court Judge Martin Maley said.

The VT-ICAC has partnered with state agencies to put pedophiles behind bars and stop child pornography. They also hope to identify and support children who have fallen victim to these crimes.
