Gas pipeline gets approval from county commission

Posted: Updated:

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. (AP) - A county planning commission has voted in favor of a Vermont Gas pipeline from Middlebury to the International Paper Mill in Ticonderoga, N.Y.

The 15-11 vote Wednesday night came five weeks after two towns that would be in the path of the pipeline, Cornwall and Shoreham, voted to oppose the project.

Vermont Public Radio reports the Addison County Regional Planning Commission said the proposal conforms with "applicable provisions" of the county's regional plan.

The company plans call for a $70 million project to pipe natural gas from Middlebury to the mill, passing through the Addison County towns.

The commission's decision now goes to the Vermont Public Service Board.
