We now know which officer fired the shot that killed a Brattleboro man.

Vermont State Police say Brattleboro Police Sgt. Mark Carignan killed Michael Santiago, 35, last week at America's Best Inn on Putney Road.

Police say Carignan was executing a search warrant during a drug raid and shot Santiago as he entered the room.

Carignan is on administrative leave.

The case is in the hands of the prosecutor in neighboring Bennington County. Windham County State's Attorney Tracy Shriver recused her office from the case, since her office regularly works with the Brattleboro Police Department.
