Governor Peter Shumlin is mourning the death of his father.

George Shumlin passed away Thursday at the age of 88. The governor says his dad died at his home in Westminster West after a short illness. Kitty Shumlin, his wife of 62 years, was by his side, along with his children.

The governor called his father a great friend as well as a great father. In a statement Friday, Governor Shumlin said, "We will miss him terribly but are so glad he enjoyed almost 89 healthy years and that his decline was brief. We will be honoring his life and love for his family privately. My dad was a great friend as well as a great father, and every day I'll work to live up to his example."

George Shumlin and his wife settled in Vermont in 1955. George worked as an actor, a stage manager and director in regional and summer theaters, on Broadway and in network television. Later in life, he taught at the Putney School and Arizona's Verde Valley School. George and his wife, Kitty, founded Putney Student Travel.
