One dead in Fairfax fire

Posted: Updated:

Tragedy Friday in Fairfax. Fire ripped through a home with two people inside but only one made it out alive.

The fire roared through the raised ranch at 2993 Main Street in Fairfax Friday afternoon.

"The smoke was so intense and you could see the flames, I am sure you could see it for miles," says Carol Baker who witnessed the fire.

Carol and Elmer Baker were driving by when they spotted the blaze. Carol says her husband immediately jumped out of their car and raced to the scene.

"We stopped right there at the driveway and my husband got out and just started running toward the house," Carol says.

Elmer and others rescued a woman from inside the home, but the fire spread quickly and they were not able to save her husband who was trapped on the second floor.

"My husband told him it was too late, you have got to get out it's going to blow," Baker says.

State police say one person died in the fire. Still Carol and others are calling her husband a hero.

"He is a hero and in another way he does not feel like it because he couldn't save him he said."

The couple can't help but wish they could have done more.

"My heart really goes out to them, that we couldn't save him it is very sad, my heart is really hurting for the family," Baker said.

Investigators say the fire was accidental and the death doesn't appear to be suspicious.
