GMP settles with Lowell residents

Posted: Updated:

After years of battling a wind power project near their property, a Vermont couple is selling out to the wind farm owners.

Don and Shirley Nelson own nearly 600 acres in the shadow of Lowell Mountain. The Nelsons opposed the Kingdom Community Wind project before and during construction, and their property became a hot-spot for protesters who tried to stop the towers.

Since the 21-turbines started turning, the Nelsons have also been among those complaining about excessive noise. Four years ago, GMP offered to buy the Nelson farm. The couple said no then, but now they have agreed to sell 540 acres for 1.3 million -- about the same price GMP originally offered. The deal also settles a lawsuit over a boundary dispute between GMP and the Nelsons.  Under the deal, GMP says the Nelsons get to keep 35 acres of land.  And can live on the property for up to two years.
