I-91 Brattleboro bridge stabilized

Posted: Updated:

Safety concerns led to the sudden closure of a section of Interstate 91 in Brattleboro over the weekend.
The highway was closed between exits one and three, with traffic diverted onto Route 5, right through downtown Brattleboro. State Police say the detour caused significant traffic problems for travelers.
Monday state officials released more information about the reason for the closure. Contractors are in the process of demolishing the northbound bridge over Route 30, with both directions of traffic sharing the southbound bridge. During the demolition the northbound bridge shifted -- and with concerns it could fall into the southbound bridge, authorities decided to close the highway.
State transportation officials say the bridge has been stabilized and traffic was routed back onto I-91 as of late Sunday night.
