BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Vermont's Bennington Battle Monument is opening for the season.

At 306 feet and 417 steps, it's the state's tallest monument. It has been open to the public since 1891.

The cornerstone was laid in 1887. It was built to commemorate a pivotal Revolutionary War battle fought there in August 1777.

From the observation level, visitors can see a view of Vermont, Massachusetts and New York. Admission is $5 for adults, $1 for children under 14 and free for children under five. Scheduled school groups can also visit for free.

The monument will open April 19. It's open daily until the end of October.
