South Burlington High School students go 'Bald for Burke'

Posted: Updated:

When class was over the buzzers came out at South Burlington High School. Come 3 p.m. Tuesday, the auditorium was transformed into a high-volume barber shop where the buzz cuts came for free.

"This is not first time I've shaved head on this stage, which is pretty funny," Principal Patrick Burke said.

But it was the first time Burke's gone bald with hundreds at his back.

"I'm really pretty blown away by it to be honest and it's almost hard to talk about or put into words," Burke said.

The popular administrator has been battling non-Hodgkin's lymphoma since March. Tuesday, his students, faculty and staff lost their locks, going bald for Burke!

"It shows we're all together, we're all one community," student Eric Schwaigert said.

"Patrick supports every one of us whether we are students or faculty, and we support him fully," said David Shiffert, a Spanish teacher.

"It's really cool that so many people are willing to do that for him," said Molly Burke, his daughter.

For Schwaigert, the decision to choose the new do was a simple one.

"He's such an amazing guy, you couldn't ask for a better principal than him, honestly," he said.

Burke is two sessions into six rounds of chemo. He says he's feeling OK and that the community support has been huge.

"I'm not going to lie, it's really helped a lot," Burke said. "It's helped me, it's helped my family and I'll never be able to say thank you enough."

He's ready to let his actions speak for him, eager to beat cancer and get back to work!

"The greatest high school in the world," Burke said to applause.

A high school that will have a whole new look Wednesday morning.
