Police: Child sparked Plattsburgh house fire

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -

Police say a house fire in Plattsburgh Tuesday morning was started by a child.

First responders say when they arrived at 42 Smith Street, the house was completely engulfed in flames. Everyone inside got out safely.

City police say the Plattsburgh Fire Department quickly put out the fire. They say the cause of the fire was suspicious at first.

"Detectives did an investigation and determined the origin of the fire was on the front porch. Subsequent interviews of the family members revealed that the fire was accidentally lit by a child in the house playing with a lighter and paper," Plattsburgh City Police Lt. Patrick Rascoe said.

Police say there will be no criminal charges because the child in under 8 years old.

The family is being assisted by the American Red Cross North Country chapter.
