Woman sentenced in Vt. crash that killed motorcyclist

NEWPORT, Vt. (AP) - A 79-year-old woman accused of causing the death of a motorcyclist in Vermont last year has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of careless or negligent operation and has received a suspended sentence of six to 12 months.

An attorney for Anne Lyons of New Hyde Park, N.Y., said she made a tragic mistake when she misjudged the speed of Daniel Sanderson's motorcycle on Route 5A in Westmore.

Lyons told police she was traveling north when she slowed down and then stopped to make a left turn. She said Sanderson was traveling south and slowed down before she turned. A driver behind Lyons said she turned suddenly, leaving Sanderson nowhere to go but into her vehicle.

The Caledonian Record reports Lyons apologized in court Wednesday.
