Prescribed burns planned in Green Mountain National Forest

Posted: Updated:

Fires may soon be burning in parts of the Green Mountain National Forest.

Federal officials will team up with local fire departments for some prescribed burns. They only plan to burn about 300 or 400 acres of the 400,000-acre forest. But officials say the closely controlled fires will reduce heavy accumulations of brush. That will help restore critical wildlife habitat, regenerate forest growth and improve watershed conditions.

The timing of the burns depends on the weather, so no specific dates have been set.

Officials say the burns are not likely to impact nearby residents, but smoke will be visible from the surrounding area and residents may smell smoke.
