Engines are revving in Montpelier

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. - With the snow melting away, people in Central Vermont were thinking about getting out into the woods on their four wheelers.

Fathers, sons, mothers, and daughters came to Montpelier on Saturday. It was a time to show off their four wheelers at the first annual Show, Shin and Brag get-together. Even a few Grizzlies came out of hibernation on this early spring event.

"Is this a growing sport? Yes, absolutely. I believe every club has experienced growth, every year," said Adam Lane of the Lost Nation ATV Club.

He helped organize the gathering. It's part celebration, part to raise awareness of a sport that in the past hasn't been view favorably by some Vermonters who think ATV's are bad for the environment.

"We do a lot when it comes to erosion control, making sure that we keep the trails clean, most every clubs work with towns on Green-Up Days, we do a lot of events like that," Lane said.

Organizers hope this Show, Shine and Brag event will help promote the 800 miles of trails in the state of Vermont.

It was also a way to publicize the Vermont All Terrain Vehicle Sportman's Association. VASA has 2,600 members in the state. It's similar to the snowmobile group VAST where, for a 70 dollar fee, you can use 800 miles of trails on private property around the state. The money is used for trail upkeep. Some towns allow riders on Class 3 and 4 roads, but right now they are not allowed on State or Federal land.

"This about everything you need to be on the road," said Tim Calley of East Calais

Calley was there to show off his machine. He is well aware of the negative image some people have of the riders.

"I like them to be more opened minded I would say, I think we should be given a chance,"
