Sen. Sanders pushes for better access to primary care

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. - Sen. Bernie Sanders is pushing for better access to primary care for patients in Vermont and across the country.

Sanders touted the improvements in access to health care since the Affordable Care Act has gone into effect. There are currently 11 nonprofit, federally qualified health centers in Vermont operating out of 51 locations. Sanders says he is proud of the work being done by Vermont's health centers, but says there's room to improve.

"Compared to other nations we have far fewer percentagewise primary care physicians than do many other countries. Our emphasis has been on specialty care; many other countries put their emphasis on primary care. And I think there is a lesson there maybe to learn," said Sanders, I-Vermont.

The 11 federally qualified health centers provide primary care to about 150,000 Vermonters.
