Youth Turkey Weekend begins

Posted: Updated:
VERMONT - Youth Turkey Weekend begins today.

Kids age 15 and under get a chance to go out and hunt turkeys before the regular season begins in May. In order to participate, they must complete a free hunter education course and go out with a licensed hunter. Experts tell us many of the kids take advantage of the youth turkey weekend every year, introducing them to the sport.

"Turkey hunting is great for kids because it's very interactive; you have the decoy out, you spend a lot of time calling the turkey, and bringing turkeys in, and watching them strut. So it's a great way for kids to get involved with hunting and a great way to get outdoors for families," says Tom Rogers with Vermont Fish & Wildlife.

We're told this weekend is a great opportunity for more experienced hunters to mentor our youth. Kids can take home one bearded gobbler this weekend.
