BENNINGTON, Vt. -

New details about the man shot by a Bennington police officer.

Court papers show that Gregory Filo showed up at the police station earlier on the same day he was shot. There, he told officers he wanted them to kill him. He was then referred to Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.

But Filo came back to the police station later Tuesday, and he was armed with a knife. Police say he refused to drop the weapon and charged at officers instead.

Investigators have now identified the officer who fired at Filo as Sgt. Michael Plusch. Plusch is on paid administrative leave as the case is investigated by Vermont State Police.

The Bennington PD will also review its policies.

Filo remains hospitalized in critical condition. Officials confirm he was hit by a bullet in his midsection.

Filo is charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
