BARRE, Vt. (AP) - Barre police say a man shot during an attempted robbery in the Vermont city is paralyzed from the neck down.

The suspect in the shooting, 24-year-old Marcus Stone of Barre, pleaded not guilty Monday to one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Barre police say officers were called to a motel late Friday after reports of gunshots. The documents say that when police arrived, Stone was holding a handgun and 30-year-old Justin Roberts was laying on the ground with a neck wound. Roberts also had a handgun

A witness told police Stone fired after Roberts demanded money and pointed his weapon at Stone and an infant.

The Times Argus reports Stone claims the shooting was self-defense.

Police say some of the money was proceeds of drug sales.
