SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -

The Red Cross is honoring men and women from across the region who have made a difference in their communities.

The Inaugural Heroes Award Breakfast took place Tuesday morning in South Burlington.

People were honored in eight categories, ranging from a first responder to a military veteran to an animal rescuer. Recipients were nominated by their communities.

"We had over 60 nominations representing all sorts of acts of courage and compassion, but I think we found nine really amazing individuals to honor today," said Doug Bishop of the American Red Cross.
