WINOOSKI, Vt. -

A creative and environmentally conscious fifth-grader from Winooski won a big honor Tuesday.

Penny Ly from JFK Elementary School is Vermont's Doodle for Google competition winner.

Google challenged students from across the country to draw a doodle for their iconic search page. The theme was "If I could invent one thing to make the world a better place."

Ly's doodle depicted artificial plants which could convert carbon dioxide into oxygen.

"The oxygen is running out on our planet, so it's good to have something to create that oxygen for us to breathe," Penny Ly said.

"We saw a lot of themes with nature and clean water access and stuff like that, so it's really cool that we did see common themes among a thousand plus entries," said Mimi Doe of Google.

Ly will travel to Google's headquarters in California with the other 49 state winners. A national champion will be crowned based on votes from the public.

The winner's design will be featured on Google's search page for a day. The prize includes college scholarship money and a technology grant for their school.
