Champlain Elementary students learn about recycling tires

Posted: Updated:

Students at Champlain Elementary School in Burlington got a lesson on what it takes to make a tire and how to recycle it.

The fifth-grade class got a firsthand look at the life cycle of a tire from the rubber tree to the road. Noyes Automotive and Tire partnered with teachers at Champlain Elementary to teach students how to properly dispose of old tires.

"There's a lot of chemicals in tires and it's really bad for the environment, so it’s important that we recycle tires so they won't pollute the environment," said Charlie McConnell, fifth-grade student.

"The other thing that I thought was very interesting from the kids’ perspective is all the different uses for tires once they've been used. Making them into tire swings, jewelry or walls, so I think that kids really do understand that aspect of reusing them and recycling them," said Katherine Grykien, a teacher.

Those interested in recycling old tires can drop them off at Champlain Elementary May 3 and 4. Students will also be holding a car wash and barbecue.
