Vt. House votes to shrink number of school districts

Posted: Updated:

The Vermont House voted Tuesday night to drastically shrink the number of school districts in the state.

In a 75-62 vote, the House approved a bill that would bring the total number of Vermont school districts from 277 to about 50.

Supporters say it will streamline administration, save money and improve education quality.

Opponents say it takes the control away from local cities and towns that know their students’ needs best.

That bill now heads to the Senate, which is expected to consider a different proposal pushed by the governor's office.
