Leahy pushes for more federal help fighting opiate addiction

WASHINGTON, D.C. -

Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy is pushing for more federal law enforcement support for Vermont's fight against opiate addiction.

Leahy's Judiciary Committee took testimony from the head of the DEA Wednesday about the war on drugs. Leahy said he is particularly concerned about the growth in opioid abuse.

Leahy convened a field hearing in Rutland last month focusing on the combined efforts of police and other agencies to confront the problem. He says law enforcement agents in Vermont are requesting more federal help.

Leahy also questioned the DEA chief about prescription drug abuse and the emergence of new opiates like Zohydro that don't have the tamper-proofing now included with other powerful opiates like Oyxcontin.
