Governor addresses heroin overdoses in weekly press conference

Posted: Updated:

Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin addressed the recent overdose surge during his weekly press conference.

Wednesday, he said it should serve as a reminder that Vermont cannot move fast enough to not only improve its drug prevention efforts but to get recovery right.

Shumlin says that takes money, and he thanked the owner of Subaru New England, Ernie Boch Jr., for making a $25,000 donation to Recovery House, the group that operates a small residential treatment center in Wallingford and a halfway house in Rutland. Then in the middle in the press conference, Boch decided to raise his donation to $50,000.

Dick Keane/Recovery House: This, again, is a real big help to us and I really appreciate it.

Ernie Boch: You know what? I'm going to make it 50 grand instead of 25.

Dick Keane: Oh, my God. That's unbelievable.

"I don't do drugs anymore. I look like I do drugs, but I don't. But I believe it is incredibly important this kind of work," Boch said.

The extra $25,000 came as a complete surprise to the CEO of Recovery House. Keane says the facility will use the money to help addicts in recovery and teach them life skills to succeed after rehab.
