Damaged sprinkler forces evacuations at UVM

Posted: Updated:

A damaged sprinkler forced evacuations at a University of Vermont dorm early Thursday morning.

It happened on the fifth floor of Jeanne Mance Hall on Pearl Street around 2 a.m. when fire officials say someone broke the sprinkler. Water streamed through much of the building.

Nine rooms are severely damaged. About 150 students live there and spent the night in hotels. All but 18 of them will be allowed back Thursday night.

UVM police are now investigating to find out how the sprinkler broke.

UVM's last day of classes was Wednesday and students are now heading into finals.
