BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Department of Health is awarding $1.5 million in grants to 18 community organizations to support smoke-free parks and housing, alcohol and drug prevention and programs emphasizing healthy living.

Among the recipients are the Rutland Area Prevention Coalition, which will get $140,000, and the Winooski Coalition for a Safe and Peaceful Community, which will get over $99,000.

In Rutland, the coalition is combining initiatives from the Regional Planning Commission and the Rutland Area Physical Coalition to increase exercise opportunities and from the Rutland Area Farm and Food Link to expand access to local foods.

The Winooski Coalition has worked to educate middle and high school students about the dangers of secondhand smoke. It also will be working to enhance restrictions on alcohol advertising and promotion.
