Dartmouth among schools under investigation

Posted: Updated:
HANOVER, N.H. -

Dartmouth is one of 55 colleges and universities being investigated for Title IX violations when it comes to sex assault and harassment on campus.

For the first time, the U.S. Department of Education released a full list of all open investigations Thursday. Dartmouth is the only school in our region on that list. Unlike other schools, the investigation at Dartmouth has been public since last May. And rather than starting in response to a specific complaint, officials opened the investigation as a compliance review.

Legal expert Cheryl Hanna says most people think of Title IX in relation to women's sports, but it also protects female students against sexual assault and harassment. Schools in violation can face steep fines.

"What they're saying is essentially these schools are not taking sexual assault against their women students seriously, and because of that they are probably in violation of the law," Hanna said. "I don't think it’s coincidental that the list was released now when many college students are getting ready to decide where they are going to be attending."

Last month Dartmouth president Phil Hanlon says his goal is to take on sexual violence, drinking and a lack of inclusion. He says those issues are compromising the school's educational mission.
