ESSEX, Vt. -

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services is expanding in Essex.

Officials cut the ribbon to officially open the 54,000-square-foot facility Thursday.

The state-of-the-art space will help to handle applications and petitions from families hoping to reunite and from people hoping for relief due to strife or danger in their home countries.

The Vermont Service Center has a facility in St. Albans and one in Essex. The new facility next door will mean more jobs.

"Last year we brought on about 200 immigration services officers, and as we continue to expand the workforce. We are projecting an additional 100 employees in the next year to come," said Carrie Selby of the Vermont Service Center.

In all, the Citizenship and Immigration Vermont Service Center employs more than 900 people and handles more than 1 million applications a year.
