Hiker suffers accidental knife wound

FRANCONIA, N.H. (AP) - A Massachusetts hiker has been rescued from the White Mountains in New Hampshire after suffering an accidental, self-inflicted knife wound.

The Fish and Game Department says 22-year-old Benoit Armangau, of Acton, Massachusetts, was camping with a friend when he accidentally stabbed himself while cutting evergreen boughs for bedding and insulation using a 5-inch knife.

Authorities say he suffered a debilitating injury and was unable to walk without help.

Searchers, who encountered up to 2 feet of snow and rain, reached the hikers at 1:45 Thursday morning. They stabilized the injury and stayed with the young men, who had sleeping bags and tents.

Rescue teams were sent up the trail at daybreak. They made it down the mountain with the injured hiker who was able to move slowly on his own.
