Meet a young weather forecast fanatic from Fair Haven

FAIR HAVEN, Vt. -

His Vermont Weather YouTube videos get thousands of hits. Fair Haven High School student Kevin Richer, 17, says the weather is fascinating.

"Just amazed by it, just amazed by the power of nature," he said.

Kevin has had a passion for sun, rain and snowstorms since he can remember.

"It's really been since he's been small," dad Thomas Richer said. "When there was a storm, we'd sit right by the window over here and he'd just sit there and watch the lightning. He'd always be fascinated by it."

Now, Kevin is making his own weather reports right in his Castleton home. He's got a green screen he borrowed from school, lighting and a laptop with weather apps. He records all of his shows on his iPod, and then he uploads them to his YouTube and Facebook pages.

"Every day," Kevin said.

The weather reports get posted on his school's web page, too.

Kevin says he owes being able to pursue his dream to his family and teachers who have supported and encouraged his interest.

"The first time I saw him do the weather without a script, without anything-- he just did it. I was flabbergasted because you know, he sounded like a professional weatherman," said Clarena Renfrow, one of Kevin's former teachers.

They even helped him out with having fun with the weather. During that wicked weather this winter, Kevin pulled an April Fool's joke and had his school resource officer arrest him for "felonious forecasting" and other charges.

His reports are a hit with his friends at school.

"I think it's fantastic," said Angel Beebee, a classmate.

"I love it. I mean, he's certainly doing a really good job," classmate Dolly Wing said.

Kevin says he hopes to continue to pursue his dream and sees his uniqueness as an asset.

"That's just my voice. I honestly don't-- people say I have a Boston accent, a New York accent and Jersey all in one," he said.

As for inspiration and pointers, he gets that right here in the Green Mountain State.

Reporter Elizabeth Keatinge: And who's your favorite Channel 3 weather person?

Kevin Richer: My favorite Channel 3 has to be Gary Sadowsky.

Elizabeth Keatinge: Why is Gary your favorite?

Kevin Richer: He's helped me a lot with my weather and I've met him on a couple occasions and just watching him in the morning, just a smile on his face and how peppy he is in the morning, that's what I want to do.

Kevin plans to continue doing his daily weather reports and hopes to study atmospheric sciences in college and someday become a professional weatherman. A high school weatherman who thinks it's never too early to start working on your big dreams.

Kevin says he hopes to attend Lyndon State College and wants to start his weather career right here at home in Vermont.
