Rutland gets a head start on Green Up Day

Posted: Updated:

Rutland got a head start on Green Up Day.

Participants picked up trash from "the pit" parking lot at the corner of Wales and Center streets Friday afternoon.

The event, now in its 44th year, is traditionally the first Saturday in May. Event sponsors say it's never too early to get started.

"It's really important for Vermonters to show pride in their communities, to protect the resources that we have, the natural resources that we have and I can't imagine Vermont without Green Up Day," said Steve Costello from Green Mountain Power.

Green Up Day's future was in jeopardy this spring after the nonprofit said it didn't have enough funding, but Green Mountain Power has pledged $20,000 a year for the next three years to help keep it going.

Events will continue Saturday in more than 200 Vermont communities.
