After dropping the first game in each of the last two North Atlantic Conference Tournaments, the Spartans made sure it didn’t happen a third time, getting an impressive performance from Samuel Spencer and some timely hitting to earn a 7-2 win over Lyndon St.
Spencer gave up just a single unearned run and two hits through his first seven innings of work to stake Castleton to a 3-1 lead. The sophomore gave up a single run in the eighth as he finished with five strikeouts and two walks in his 8.0 innings of action for his fifth win of the year.
At the plate, Matt McNamee went an impressive 4-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Joe Borowski added a home run and two RBI while Taylor Vile recorded a pair of hits on the day.
Sam Matthews took the loss for the Hornets, giving up six earned runs and striking out four in 7.2 innings. The senior was impressive through his first 7.0 innings, allowing just two earned runs to keep the Spartans at bay. Ian Murdock had two hits and the lone RBI for Lyndon St. on offense.
The Hornets took advantage of two errors in the top of the first. Devon Rollins reached on an error at shortstop and was bunted over to second. The centerfielder then scored on an errant throw to first for the 1-0 advantage. A pop out to second ended the frame.
Castleton came back in the bottom of the inning as Tyler Lord led off with a single through the left side. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and then third on a groundout to second base. Borowski hit a groundout to the right side, scoring Lord and tying the game.
The Spartans took the lead with some timely hitting in the bottom of the fourth. Dan Errico laced a one-out double to the wall in centerfield and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Macyn Clifford grounded out, scoring Errico for the 2-1 lead. McNamee then singled and Nate Swahn walked but they were stranded.
Castleton added to its lead two innings later as McNamee laced a double to the wall in left-center, scoring Clifford to make it 3-1.
Lyndon St. threatened in the top of the seventh, putting two runners on with no outs. However, Spencer struck out the next batter and Swahn threw down to second, picking off the runner for the second out. Spencer then induced a groundout to end the frame.
The Hornets made it interesting an inning later. Kyle Whitworth and Tyler Pelletier led off with back-to-back singles. Spencer followed with a strikeout but Ian Sackett put a single through the right side to load the bases. A bunt single by Ian Murdock cut the lead to 3-2, though Spencer got a strikeout and a groundout out to get out of the jam.
Borowski gave Castleton some breathing room in the bottom of the eight as he launched a 1-0 pitch over the right field fence for the 4-2 advantage. The Spartans added three more runs in the frame to go to the ninth with a 7-2 lead.
TJ Fearon closed out the Hornets in order in the ninth with a pair of strikeouts to give the team the win.
Castleton returns to action on Saturday at noon when the team will play Husson. Lyndon State faces Maine Farmington Saturday at 9 a.m.
