Barre community rallies behind 5-year-old needing a transplant

BARRE, Vt. -

Drew Bernier was born on January 14, 2009.

"He's definitely a typical 5 year old. And he has a new baby sister, Sophia, and he loves his baby sister," says Karen Gordon, his grandmother.

In February, Drew's family received devastating news. Drew has a rare chromosome deficiency called monosomy 7 and will need a bone marrow transplant.

"If he didn't have this transplant, the doctor said it's not will he get leukemia, it's when he will get the leukemia," says Jim Bernier, Drew's grandfather.

While Drew is preparing for his transplant at Boston Children's Hospital, the people back in his hometown of Barre are rallying together. The Drew Strong Benefit at the Barre Elk's Lodge is a silent auction of more than 250 items. The money raised will go to help Drew and his family.

"They're going to have a long road to recovery, Marie will not be able to work and Josh will have to take off a lot of time so we really need to help support them with their everyday bills, mortgage and all that," says family friend Kristin Calcagni.

More than 250 people are coming to Drew's benefit. The transplant is taking place May 8.

"90 percent they said. 90 percent chance of everything going okay," says Gordon.

Members of the Barre community have chipped in nearly $40,000 so far for Drew -- a lot of people doing a lot for one Barre boy.
