Renovations underway at Brooks House in Brattleboro

Posted: Updated:

Renovations are moving forward on the Brooks House in downtown Brattleboro.

The building was ravaged by fire in the Spring of 2011.

A newly-built second floor will house classroom space for the two colleges that are opening branches there -- Vermont Tech and the Community Collage of Vermont. The $23 million project is being spearheaded by a group of five local developers. It was made possible with help from new market and historic tax credits. The building will also have a mix of residential and commercial space.

"It makes for a more dynamic building. It makes for a building that is active 24 hours a day," says developer Bob Stevens. "So it doesn't shut down at night. The residential and the colleges feed the retail and the restaurants. We have a lot of food venders coming in downstairs and it creates sort of a community."

Almost all of the 23 apartments have been rented. And leases are also signed for three of the eight commercial spaces. Tenants will begin moving in this August.
