Everything Animals: Therapy Dogs Needed

Posted: Updated:

There's a critical need for therapy dog teams in Vermont.

That's the word from Therapy Dogs of Vermont -- a non-profit group of certified dog-and-trainer teams that visit places like hospitals, schools and nursing homes.

They say they need more volunteers -- because more facilities are finding the therapy helpful.

"We have about 300 teams going to 140 facilities around vermont into New York, New Hampshire and even into Quebec," says Therapy Dogs of Vermont Executive Director Bob Uerz.

"Our handler and dog teams and volunteer so we're always looking for good dogs and handlers to help with the growing need for visits," says Deb Helfrich, the director of certification and training.

Therapy Dogs of Vermont works with people to see if their pets are right for it and helps them get certified.

They look at things like obedience...temperament and social skills for the potential dogs.
