Vernon once again votes to defund local police

Posted: Updated:
VERNON, Vt. (AP) - Voters in the Vermont town of Vernon have once again approved getting rid of the local police force.

They agreed Monday to contract with the Windham County Sheriff's Department for police coverage, which will save the town money.

Budget cuts have been in the works since the August announcement that Entergy would shut down the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant by the end of this year. Yankee accounts for about half of the town's municipal tax base.

The original vote was in March.

The local police department will cease its operations on July 1.
